Picking a software Pt. 2

At this point, all I have left of this project to do is edit. I am at another fork (4-pronged to be specific), as I was with my postcard software. I did some research and found four possible software: iMovie, PowerDirector, DaVinci Resolve, and Vimeo Create. I had to focus and weigh the pros and cons of making movies with iMovie, Davinci Resolve, Vimeo Create, and PowerDirector.


Vimeo Create:

Pros:

  • Vimeo Create is simple to use.
  • It provides a large selection of templates and presets to pick from.
  • Editing seems really straightforward, with tools for stuff like chopping, dividing, incorporating audio and visual effects, and modifying color.

Cons:

  • It lacks a lot of customization, such as the capacity to design unique transitions and effects.
  • A lot of people say that upload speeds are so slow, they can take DAYS.
  • The free edition offers few features.
  • If I Don't pay, I need to have a watermark in the middle.


PowerDirector: 

Pros:

  • PowerDirector seems easy to use going by online reviews
  • Lots of fairly easy tools like color correction, audio editing, and visual effects.
  • Simple and user-friendly. 
  • Convenient transfer to youtube or vimeo.

Cons:

  • PowerDirector is really expensive.
  • Huge learning curve.
  • Really powerful computer is required.


DaVinci Resolve

Pros:

  • Free to download and use.
  • color correction, audio editing, and visual effects, are available.
  • user-friendly interface and simple navigation.

Cons:

  • Advanced functions makes it challenging for users.
  • a powerful computer is needed.
  • Free edition is very limited.

iMovie:

Pros:

  • Very easy to navigate and use
  • Pre-installed on all Apple devices, making it really convenient
  • trimming, splitting, adding audio, and video effects.
  • easy to navigate and find what you need.
  • Audio filters are really user-friendly. Stuff like voiceovers are easy to use
  • I have actual experience using the program.

Cons:

  • Fairly limited in terms of features
  • Not very flexible customization-wise
  • Really slow download speeds


After some deliberation, I have decided I will be using iMovie for my editing.

Story: boarded ✓

  First Scene- collecting my thoughts     The first scene is comprised of the first 3 panels of my storyboard sheet and takes up the first 18 seconds of the song. This section stays very literal to the lyrics, establishing the basis of the story. The viewer will see the character looking out of a dirty old window, before a jumpcut to a time lapse of the hustle and bustle of city life right outside that window. He then drops and sinks into a seat to think. Second Scene- Wandering     The second scene combines panels 4 and 5, bringing the character out of his room and out onto the streets in order to search for the sound which he craves. Again, the viewer sees a time lapse of city life moving by before a closeup of the character, who is sweating. Then, the viewer follows the character walking down the lines in the middle of the street on his search. Kids in America -The Muffs

 The time has finally come. As they say in the opening to their album "Hamburger", "The pain, the pleasure from fine generations of rockin' music: We need THE MUFFS!" This project was a rockin' good time to work on. I enjoyed the extensive creative liberties that the project allowed for us. I picked this song, because, at the time of assignment, I was obsessed with the song and the band. I think they made great music, and figured I'd enjoy this project because I enjoy the music. It was very nice to have the ability to pick not only any genre of my choice, but any song I'd like is really nice. I'm eternally grateful to my friend Eric who you will see in my video. Overall, I think this project turned out considerably better than my commercial did. I'm very excited to move on in this class and very much look forward to my fuller length film.
