A study of prison shows (That is a genre I think)
Common camera angles in your genre-
- First person- allows the viewer to see the conditions that the imprisoned are in, builds empathy
- Over the shoulder shots also serve a similar purpose
- Birds eye shots allow the audience to see a space in a different light than a frontal shot, or one from the side
- I've noticed extreme closeups to be very common as well, because they accentuate the facial expression of the characters on-screen
Common Mis-en-Scene in your genre-
- Costume plays a huge part of a prison film, where, in traditional settings, the prisoner is usually wearing clothing that fit like medical scrubs. The prisoners are typically in striped blue or black and white colors, where the cops wear colors like green, brown, or blue
Common Editing in your genre-
- My research on this was rather inconclusive, but using an example (Shawshank Redemption), here's what i've got:
- Cutaway- the cutaway serves as a flashback to his life before prison, showing the reason why he may be there
- eye-line match-
- a match-cut shows that the bottle in his hands grows emptier and emptier, and his face, angrier and angrier
Common sound in your genre-
- Diegetic and nondiegetic sounds are a HUGE part of these films. Again, using Shawshank Redemption, I will explain.
- As the titles begin to play, we hear music playing in a non-diegetic way ('If I Didn't Care- The Ink Spots), and then can be heard after a cut playing on Andy's car radio, switching it to diegetic
Example films of your genres-
- Shawshank Redemption
- Prisoners
- Bad Boys (1983)
- Kiss of the Spider WWoman
- 12 Monkeys
What elements of the genre that you like, and would you use?-
- I really love the use of diegetic and nondiegetic sounds, and actually have the means of reproducing them. I also like cutaways, and again have the means to use those.
What elements of the genre do not appeal to you, and would you stay away from?-
- There is nothing in this genre that I really dislike. Overall, the movies/shows always end up good
