I promise, mom! I'm watching punk music videos for school!!!

  • Typically a lot of movement through something such as tracking shots of the band down hallways or a crowd of people.
  • Videos tend to use a simple, basic backdrop rather is a more complicated one in order to compliment the livelihood of a crowd and performance and not distract the viewer from that.
  • The image of the band/ artist is portrayed through their style and music. In music video’s they tend to be dressed in typical punk inspired clothing which tends to be laid back and casual or smart-casual. They would generally have a lot of tattoos or piercings. The hair for males are usually straight, longer than usual for a male and also swept to the side. For a female their hair tends to be layered, straightened and dyed. Usually black or bright, unnatural colours.
  • Pop-Punk videos are largely performance based.
  • The music instruments are usually played by the band members during the performance.
  • The lead singer tends to move towards the microphone during a lyrical part of the song and away when there is an instrumental part so the shot can focus on their instrument which is generally an electric guitar.
  • Typical shots used in a Pop-Punk video during the performance section are close ups of the instruments being played, a full shot of the band, up shots of members to show their dominance, close ups on the lead singer especially when lip syncing, mid shots or full shots of each of the other band members.
  • There tends to be low lighting and a lot of back lighting to create silhouettes in the videos.
  • Slow motion shots are used a lot to create emphasis on the artists and create a more serious tone to the video.
  • The narrative doesn’t always link up to song directly. Or the video would instead use a concept rather than narrative.
  • During editing, fades as transitions are done on the beats would be used during slower sections of the song and just straight cuts would be used in faster sections.
  • Regularly, quick shots are used and flow with the song section, and the chorus usually is even faster
